In 1975 Rick Chatham met Maricela Leiton on a blind date just 3 hours after landing in Costa Rica. A year later they married, and while alternating
residences between Costa Rica and North Carolina, they raised four
spectacular children--Anna, Bonnie, Jill and Richard (ages 20-25). From a
parent's perspective the kid's bi-cultural upbringing has been especially
fruitful.Since 1975 Rick has worked in agribusiness in Central America (pineapples, ramie, organic apples), including production, quality control, marketing, export and finance. Finally in 1987 the family stepped outside mainstream industrial society to purchase a small abandoned dairy farm, and to begin their valuable experiment in "sustainable living". For the family that "sea change" continues to reverberate. In Costa Rica both the family homestead (La Ronda) and forest reserve (Terra Folia) continue to evolve, while providing a conservationist voice and lasting benefits to local residents. All four children are headed for distinguishing careers in fashion, animal husbandry, teaching and design. Family is forever. Welcome to Costa Rica! Rick conducts EarthFoot's Organic Farm & A Private Rainforest Reserve program. |
