Earthfoot hosts Nadine Fletcher
& Joel Hagen

Joel & NadineRecognized as two of the best and most knowledgeable guides in the area, we have both worked as professional interpreters since 1991. Our extensive knowledge comes from personal research, working as park interpreters for Parks Canada and from training through Interpretation Canada. We both have won awards for our interpretive work from this organisation.

We are certified "master interpreters" by the Mountain Parks Heritage Interpretation Association (MPHIA). In fact, we teach the "Fundamentals of Interpretation" part of the course taken by all guides in the mountain national parks in order to get this certification.

Your safety is also our concern. We are fully trained in first aid and on-trail guiding. Our company is insured and is licensed to operate by Parks Canada.

Nadine Fletcher

Main field of interest: Interpreting natural and cultural history for visitors. Yorke Edwards describes a good nature interpreter as "a pied piper; leading people easily into new and fascinating worlds that their senses never really penetrated before." For Nadine it means making nature relevant to people, provoking their curiosity and leading them to a personal "aha!"

Education: BA in drama, Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB and two years of a masters in Theatre Design (sets/costumes/lighting) at the University of Calgary.

Languages: English and French

Background: Born in 1965 to a French-Canadian mother and English-Canadian father, Nadine grew up in the woods of Nova Scotia. As an adult, she discovered drama and enjoyed six exciting years in the intensely creative atmosphere of university theatre. Her love of nature and her drama and design skills have contributed a great deal to her interpretive work.

Joel Hagen

Main field of interest: Ecology. Joel places special emphasis on the connections between all living things in the park. He takes great pleasure in sharing with visitors his knowledge and love of this mountain ecosystem.

Education: BSc in biology, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC

Languages: English and French

Background: Born in 1965, Joel was raised on the British Columbia coast. A lifelong camper and birdwatcher, he became an amateur naturalist at the age of eight. After studying biology, Joel moved to Banff National Park. He found his new home to be the ultimate natural university and thinks it unlikely he will ever graduate.

Nadine and Joel conduct the Interpretive Walks and Hikes in Lake Louise and in Banff & Yoho Ntl. Parks tour.
