Background: Since the death of his parents, Sekiwa has
been the head of his family, responsible for his unmarried brothers and sisters, and more
recently, his wife. He manages the family small-holding, and various home-based projects. One project is sharing their rural life with foreign visitors, another is repairing text books for local schools. Sekiwa has organised village projects, such as irrigation schemes. The family are also engaged in handicrafts. For example hats are manufactured from plants grown in their fields. He is in his 30s and speaks excellent English. The family are Shona, and Christian. There is no paid employment locally, and it is very difficult for village people to get cash to buy everyday items such as candles and soap. Sharing their produce, living space, and lifestyle is a very effective way of generating a small cash income - as well as being a very rewarding and educational experience for visitors. NOTE: Sekiwa gets into town to check his e-mail only about once a week, so mail exchanges may be delayed a little. Sekiwa hosts our Homestay with a Rural African Family and Homestay & Some Touring programs. |
