I was born in Portsmouth, but apart from ten early years in England I spent all of my life in eastern Scotland. I spent the first six years of my working life as a meteorologist, and the remainder as an oceanographer with the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen. I first became really interested in birds when I was in Libya with the Royal Air Force. There were some wonderful falls of migrants at Tobruk. I have been watching birds ever since! I am a member of all the usual societies and sit on the local members committee of the RSPB and SOC in Aberdeen.
