Mynor Pinto
& his family

During about half of the year Mynor and his family are on the island attending the lodge and exploring the near by ancient Mayan Cities and Jungles. When you visit, if none of the Pintos are there, you may be dealt with by a local man and his wife. In the summer of 2002, here is what Mynor writes us:

Our ecolodge is a non-profit conservation family oriented project. We do not raise any money for our project. We are voluntary workers, and do not distribute any earnings. Nobody of our family has any salary or any other retribution. All the money we get from the operation of the ecolodge is used for paying the salary of our workers (all are local workers and managers), making improvements in the ecolodge and buying some portions of land that still have some considerable extents of jungle and wild animals. We have invested a very big effort in their education and they are fantastic workers. Our ecolodge has the best record until now in all Guatemala of people satisfied (100%) of the food, the lodge and of our natural reserve.

With the help of the Rotary Club from Canada we are are right now working in a project of introducing potable water no the very small near by community and installing "letrinas" in all the homes in this community, so they would not contaminate the lagoon. We have already induced the local community to not kill the wild animals, and to not catch them for their sale, and to not burn the remaining jungle. They already know that their income depends in how pristine would remain the natural resources and beauty of the area.

Our next goal for is to build a community administrated ecolodge in a beautiful land we own in the shore of the lagoon. Our goal with this other ecolodge would be that most of the members of El Escarbado could work directly into ecotourism, improve their educational level and income and be able to broke the vicious infinite loop of poverty/depredation/more poverty in which they are stuck right now. With this project we think we would be able to protect our natural resources in the area for a long time.
