Alvaro was born in Oaxaca city in 1949. After finishing "highschool" there, he went to Monterrey in northern Mexico where he studied civil engineering. After that he won a grant to study English for a summer at the University of Kentucky in the US, and after that visited New York and Washington, DC. Eventually he returned to Mexico and acquired the diplomas he needed. At first he worked building small dams in the Valley of Oaxaca, but local corruption caused him to be dissatisfied. Besides, his thoughts were turning toward the needs of society. He saved his money and went to Israel where on a kibbutz he learned the value of land. He returned to Mexico, rediscovered his roots, and took up residence on his ancestral family hacienda, Monte Carlo, where you are invited to visit. By no means has Alvaro lost his idealism. Rather, his current efforts to pioneer small-scale, sustainable ecotourism in his area is very much a part of his long-term goal of doing what he can to help his home area. Alvaro's wife is originally French. Presently she lives in Oaxaca city with their sons, for that is the only way for the sons to have a decent education, and the family to be together frequently. Mi nombre completo es Alvaro Ricárdez Scherenberg y nací en la ciudad de Oaxaca en 1949. Estudié en la ciudad, después me fuí a Monterrey a estudiar Ingeniería Civil y haciendo eso gané una beca para estudiar inglés por un verano en los Estados Unidos y así lo hize. Fuí a la Universidad de Kentucky en Lexington y después, con amigos de esa ciudad fuí a Nueva York, Washington D.C. y regresé a México por autobús hasta Laredo. Trabajando los veranos en el campo oaxaqueño, haciendo presas para pequeña irrigaciòn en el Valle de Oaxaca, me topé con la corrupción gubernamental que me hizo sentir que mis estudios no tenían sentido. De todas maneras terminé la Escuela y obtuve un tìtulo. Regresé a trabajar a la Universidad Benito Juárez de Oaxaca, pero ya queria encontrar nuevas formas de organizar la sociedad. Me interesé mucho en los kibbutzim israelís y en dos años ya había reunido dinero y hecho los contactos con la Embajada Israelí para ir a trabajar allá. Así lo hize y me quedé un año en el cual aprendí a valorar la tierra. Como tenía amigos árabes e israelis, no pude quedarme en ese hermoso país y decidí en 1972 regresar a Oaxaca a Monte Carlo, que es el nombre de la plantación de café de mi familia. Encontré mi país y mis raíces y decidí quedarme allá. Ahora el café ha entrado en crisis por los bajos precios, pero la tierra sigue siendo bella e invitante. Y quiero mantenerla bella. Es por ello que con mi esposa , hijos y familia, estamos buscando la manera de seguir cuidándola y una de las maneras es el turismo ecológico. Sinceramente. Alvaro Ricárdez.
