Earthfoot host Bill Royce
Main interests: exploring Alaska, environmental
issues,Education: B.A. Political Science 1969, J. D. (Law) 1972 Background: Bill grew up on a forested mountainous island in southeast Alaska. A converted WWII amphibious Navy bomber (PBY) was the school bus for travel to other small towns in the region. Exploring the forests, alpine ridges, and the ocean and off shore islands were the activities which fascinated him then and now. Bill has spent a lifetime exploring and enjoying the wilds of Alaska. He has hosted and guided friends and visitors to show them the natural beauty of this place for most of his adult life. In 2000 Bill decided to establish a small eco-lodge on approximately 100 acres of birch and spruce forest 75 miles north of Anchorage. With the help of his family Bill has done everything from designing the cabins, hand clearing the sites, to peeling the spruce logs and constructing the cabins. Everything was hand crafted to work well in the Alaska environment and be ecologically benign. Bill reads widely and Birch Pond Lodge has a good natural history, Alaska, ecology, and cultural history library. Understanding the interrelationship of our culture and choices with the wider natural world is essential. Once understanding takes hold one has the responsibility to transform thought to meaningful action. Birch Pond Lodge is part of Bills meaningful action. In addition to creating and operating Birch Pond Lodge, Bill maintains a solo law practice in Anchorage, serves on an Alaska State Parks Citizen Advisory Board and is a director of the Alaska Raptor Center (a non-profit bird rescue and rehabilitation center located in Sitka, Alaska). Bill conducts EarthFoot's "Birch Pond Lodge" program |
