Earthfoot host George Swann

George Swann George's love for birds, wildlife and the natural environment was nurtured from childhood by his father's unleashed enthusiasm for natural history. As a boy he travelled to Iceland, South America, Afghanistan and India accompanying his father on various University expeditions.

George has made a lifelong study of birds, first in the UK where he grew up, then in Europe, and Africa. He lived in Mexico for a short time and travelled extensively in the USA and Canada.

George now lives in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, his choice, the small coastal town of Broome where he and his wife "put down roots" in 1989. The wonderful world of natural history experienced as a teenager influenced George to start up his own Wildlife and Natural History Tour Company specialising in birds throughout one of the worlds last wildernesses. He has a keen interest in the plants of the Kimberley, a huge and diverse subject, mammals, reptiles, Lepidoptera and of course birds. He is an enthusiastic travelling companion and a resourceful bushman, who understands the complex ecology of the Kimberley.

He has spent many years studying the migratory shorebirds that over winter in Roebuck Bay close to Broome, and the sight of tens of thousands of waders wheeling over the azure blue waters of Roebuck Bay is one of the experiences he wants to share with you. He delights in helping novices and experienced birders with identification and the status of species.

His work has extended to the study of birds on offshore Islands such as the Lacepede Islands, Adele Island and Ashmore Reef. He has also been involved in turtle tagging expeditions to the Lacepede Islands. George is also involved with ongoing research of the endangered Gouldian Finch, the Kimberley being a major stronghold for this spectacular and rare bird.
