Tlex-tan's traditional upbringing was actually exceptional, because the residential school system and the loss of the traditional family structure has caused many aboriginal people of his generation to lose  touch with their roots and culture.

Thus it is important to Tlex-tan to provide Sliammon youths with the opportunity to be culturally active while being employed in a meaningful way. Tlex-tan worked in British Columbia’s Forest Industry for many years before becoming a tour guide. He is a very skilled craftsman and a traditional carver.
