Earthfoot host Brian Westland

Brian Westland Main Field of Interest: Birds and Birding-recording environmental sounds for posterity.

Education: Richview Collegiate Institute 1979-1983, York University-1983-1984; SSW (social work), plus 22 years study of birds in the field

Background: A nature lover from birth, Brian began to focus his attention on birds around age 12. It was at this point that he began to invest in field guides from around the world with the stated ambition of learning to identify by sight all the world's species.

As a resident of suburban Toronto, Brian examined just about every green area of the city in search of bird species. Eventually he had found and identified almost every species that could be found in the region of southern Ontario. This period of heavy birding took place during his high school years -- a time when almost every minute spent outside school was invested in studying birds through home study and field trips. During this period of intense birding, he experienced his personal birding highlight - the well documented discovery of a Hermit Warbler in a neighborhood park.

After a two year stint in University, Brian entered the work force, and spent many years working in manufacturing. Eventually he returned to college to become a social service worker, the field of endeavor that brought him to Milton, Ontario.

For many years following high school, Brian dropped out of the birding scene. His relocation to Halton region, with it's vast expanse of unspoiled nature habitat, awoke the birding interest, and now he is back at it with great vigor.

The period spent in Milton has seen him add audio nature recording to his birding agenda, and he now incorporates this as a integral part of his field work.

Brian hosts our Birding Basics in Milton program.
