you this in-depth experience in the nature and culture of isolated Nagaland, a mountainous
tribal are in extreme eastern India, adjoining the Burmese border. Birding and
other wildlife watching is especially good, but the main emphasis on this trip is the
mosaic of tribal cultures to encountered. There are simply few trips as richly diversified

Host Ramesh Jangid and his family offer nature-friendly
accommodation in Nawalgarh, a town known for its wall paintings, Bungalows are
meticulously constructed in the traditional way and a rooms are beautifully decorated with
regional handicrafts, and feature full bathroom facilities. Delicious vegetarian home
cooking is provided, with most ingredients coming from the family organic vegetable
garden. Tours of various lengths focus on Rajastahn's rich culture, and homestays with
local families can be arranged.
- A Tent Camp on Chilika Lagoon
Host Shomnath Chakravarty and some friends have built a
camp with large, comfortable tents in what he calls "a womb of life." Chilika
Lagoon has been designated a "Ramsar Site" -- a wetland of international
importance. Here there are over 1000 sq km of water, 225 species of fish, 156 species of
birds, 118 species of mammals, 150 species of plants, numerous other forms of flora and
fauna and ... 1,000,000 fisher folk live in harmony. At the camp you can either take it
easy or take advantage of any of many activities, itineraries and programs.
Eco-Ethno Spirituality with the Rangers Backpacker
Community near Puri
Along the beach in a beautiful coastal forest between two much-visited Indian towns, Puri
and Konark, there is a community of backpackers seeking "peace with the Mother
Earth." The goal is to recognize and cultivate the eco spirituality within all of us.
The community, known as Rangers, focuses on matters of ecology, tradition, and local
culture. Your host, Sanjay Samantaray, says that his
visitors should possess the following qualities: have a sense of adventure and curiosity;
be ready with an open mind and warm heart to meet people, and; have a sense of humour!
In Madhya Pradesh:
- A Week in a "Raj Bungalow" in Madhya Pradesh
Atop a relatively cool plateau surrounded by jungle, your hosts, Geoff & Cherrie Whittle, are engaged in an effort to
preserve the Begal tiger, which is endangered in the wild. Public education and improving
health standards among the tribal people of Madhya Pradesh lie at the heart of their
efforts. To help pay their own expenses the Whittles have opened their home to visitors.
Visitors may expect to experience central Indian tribal life and to learn about area
wildlife in ways few regular travelers can dream of.
In Tamil Nadu:
- Mayuram Farm-Lodge of the Southern Western Ghats
Host Rajesh George operates a farm-lodge located in an
area especially good for birding. The lodge sits on a farm adjoining the
Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Wildlife sanctuary. Small scale tours in Tirunelveli District, and
treks in the Western Ghats are offered as well. The lodge is spartan but comfortable; the
emphasis being on richness of experience rather than on luxury. There is running water,
electricity, refrigerator and a telephone but no TV or hot water.
