Thumbnail description: During a 3-day hiking and boating trip in the Lacandon Rain Forest you visit a cluster of beautiful lakes in an area of low mountains with many caves. The Maya people lived here from late Preclassic to Conquest times. Among the most remarkable of their traces are paintings on stone, accessible by boat, on this tour. The forest canopy soars to about 130 feet high; a second level is dominated by palms. Tree limbs are mantled with bromeliads, orchids, ferns and other epiphytes. The tour is led by Chiapas resident Fernando Ochoa.
Thumbnail description: For nine days you will experience total immersion in photography, in and around San Cristóbal de Las Casas, surrounded by the most vivid images imaginable. Indians in beautiful native dress, but often enduring the most wretched state of impoverishment, walk streets where you can glance through doors and see courtyards reflecting incredible refinement and charm. Host Cisco Craig Dietz's art flourishes in this milieu, and he proposes to share it, and his techniques for photographing it, in a manner always respectful to the native people's privacy and sense of propriety.
