A Proposed Horseback Riding Safari
After you are picked up at the airport we will bring you to our base camp where you will meet the horses and have dinner. Next morning you will leave on your seven day adventure into the mountains. Each of the following six days of this safari will be spent travelling on horseback from camp to camp. Each will be filled with nature observation, with an experienced naturalist as your guide. You will learn the skills of living and working with horses, including grooming, saddling, and tending them, putting them out to graze at night and rounding them up in the morning. This Safari is considered moderate and suitable for ages from 16 years and up. Our horses are solid mountain horses, and with them we carry everything we need to travel through theses wild lands. We make camp in a new location every day and leave only a fire ring of stones behind. Maximum: 4 people Trips dates 2005 7 day trips:May 28-June 3 June 4-10 June 25-July 1 August 6-12 14 day trips: June 11-24 August 20-September 2 Proposed Multi-sport AdventureHigh up along the tops of Canada's highest mountain ranges in the Yukon Territory, between jagged cliffs and year round ice fields there is spectacular wildlife! Herds of pure white Mountain Goats with dagger like black horns and long scruffy coats are scaling the mountains sides as close to the last ice age as any animal could be. Grazing just below them on slightly gentler slopes but still high enough to be in the clouds, are the other white herds; The Dall Sheep. These rams proudly carry their massive curled horns across the top of the world. Here the ewe sheep and the nanny goats always keep and eye out for there two great predators, the one who soars above, the Golden Eagle, and the real king of the mountains, the Grizzly. Join us on a safari odyssey up high adn far from the world of men, where we will travel hundreds of kilometers by horseback, then canoe, and finally on foot, climbing high into the mountains. Travelling by these seperate means allows us to access increadible wilderness and wildlife that remain undisturbed and are truly wild. We start off with the horses, travelling through the foothills and interior mountains where we specialize in finding and photgraphing caribou, Dall sheep and wild horses. We take our time on the trail, stopping to explore, have a hearty lunch and let the horses drink. At night we cook over an open fire, listening to the horses grazing nearby. After 5 days we will reach our remote base camp on a pristine lake. Here we will prepare for our coming canoe trip down the lake. The next morning we say goodbye to the horses and head off of the water. As we continue deeper into the mountains we will search for wolves, moose and water fowl, hoping to see the resident Osprey. At night we make camp on the beach, listening for howling wolves and watching for moose in the early morning. After 2 days of paddling we reach the end of the lake, where we celebrate and prepare for our climb. Day 8-14: Next morning we begin our climb into some of the most remote and pristine mountains in Canada. We take our time, stopping to look around and of course to find and observe the mountain goats. Over the next seven days we will hike past galciers, and across alpine meadows, making camp high in the alpine plateaus. We will hike in a circle route, and find as many animals as we can and climb over as many ridges as we want. On the afternoon of the 14th day of your trip we will reach the lake, and relax!! day 15-16: WE paddle back down the lake. On the 16th we will reach base camp, see the horses, set up our tnets and have a great big meal. Day 17-21: Travel with the horses on another route through the mountains. We will have another great five days of riding in some of the most amazing and wild places on Earth. Over the next five days you will get to know your horse better, learn more about the land and see new valleys and mountain passes. On day 21 we arrive at our pick up point in time to drive to Whitehorse, have a shower, meet for dinner and tell some good stories! Maximum 4 people
