THE SETTING
one of the housesCount Kálnoky's guesthouses date back to the 1800s and before, though many have been restored. The village is remote with little infrastructure, so visitors should know that they may be be trading some conveniences for charm. The pictures provided here show, however, that it's possible for the visitor to be very comfortable, to be well fed, and to enjoy many wonderful experiences.

PROPOSED ITINERARY

The following example of a fortnight stay can give you an idea of how, according to your interests and time, your own programme could be tailored:

forest walkDay 1 -Arrival in the afternoon, dinner together
Day 2 -Cart-ride to the hills, campfire lunch roasting bacon in the woods, visit the shepherds to taste sheep cheese and "Orda", drink from a fizzy mineral water source
Day 3 -Visit to Bran castle, Brasov city and Tartlau or Honigberg fortified churches
Day 4 -Explore the canyon and caves of Vargyas, where the legend says the children of Hamelin emerged to found the Saxon people of Transylvania
Day 5 -Visit three Saxon villages with fortified churches, picnic with an elderly Saxon couple in their courtyard
Day 6 -Stay in Miklósvár to experience village life: visit the castle that is being restored, visit the family chapel, the blacksmith's workshop, etc... Afternoon: carriage ride to visit a hermit who will offer plenty of home made pálinka (plum or caraway brandy)
Day 7 -Tour to Sighisoara and two or three other UNESCO world heritage sites where young Saxon people will invite you for lunch with plenty of home-made wine
Day 8 -Tour to Szent Anna lake (in a volcano crater) and hiking down to Tusnád
Day 9 -Carriage ride to the fortified church of Nagyajta (neighbor village), picnic lunch up the valley of the Ajta river near Középajta
Day 10 -High-Mountain-Tour to the Nagykőhavas waterfalls
Day 11 -Szekler-Land tour to the manors of Olasztelek, Vargyas, and Erdőfüle
Day 12 -Fishing either in a lake or a near-by stream
Day 13 -Hiking through the hills
Day 14 -Visit Gelence (UNESCO church with medieval frescoes), Csernáton village museum (formerly Kálnoky manor)

This programme is tailored to allow our guests to relax and visit the most valuable sites of our region without rush and tight time-schedules. And you will experience local life as well as our beautiful natural environment. According to your interests, you might add more wildlife or cultural aspects to your programme. Depending on the season of your stay, we can also go to watch bears and owls in the evenings.

In case you wish to stay longer than a week, we offer as an option 3-day (2-3 night) tours by Land Rover Defender to more remote destinations, like the famous painted monasteries of Moldova. Our British friend and guide of "Roving Romania" will show you around and eventually bring you back to Miklósvár.
