In the Central Lowlands
Birding Tours along the Panama Canal Area and Cerro Azul

These birding day tours cover a variety of habitats and the most spectacular birds of the Panama Canal area. You will be introduced to a variety of tropical bird families, such as trogons, toucans and puffbirds. Also you will learn to identify an assortment of tropical flycatchers. We'll cover places like the Pipeline Road, Metropolitan Park and Achiote Road. We'll move to the Cerro Azul foothills where an interesting mix of colorful tanagers waits for us. These are half or full day tours led by a bilingual bird guide, with good eyes and fully equipped. At very slow pace there are opportunities to photograph birds, butterflies or common wildlife. These tours are conducted by Jose Carlos García.

A Week of Birdwatching in the Panama Canal Watershed

The lowlands along the Panama Canal comprise some of the world's best birding territory. One destination is Pipeline Road, were more than 500 species have been spotted in a single day during an Audubon Society’s Christmas Count. Another very productive birding spot is the Smithsonian Institution’s Barro Colorado Natural Monument on Barro Colorado Island. This biological reserve has been a protected tropical rainforest since 1923, longer than any other protected jungle in the world. Trips to these and other famous birding spots are conducted by Annie Young, accompanied by a local birding expert.

A Week of Two Native Cultures Plus Some Great Birdwatching

This trip combines highlights of the above bird-oriented tour with opportunities to experience two indiginous Panamanian cultures -- the Kuna and the Embera-Choco. The Kuna are famous for their colorful blouses containing cutwork applique textile panels. The Kunas live on beautiful palm fringed islands in the San Blas Archipelago on Panama's Caribbean side. The Embera- Chocoe live largely in the rainforest of the Darien Gab between Panama and Colombia. The trip involves taking a piragua (native boat) through the tropical rainforest and hiking to a village of the Embera indigenouscommunity, where dances, rituals and food will be shared. This experience is conducted by Annie Young.
