Platypus

Background: With his partner, Elaine Harding, Jonathan owns "Warrigal," a highland tropical rainforest preserve on the Evelyn Tablelands, southwest of Cairns. Acquired in 1992, the preserve adjoins a State Forest fauna sanctuary within the largest single tract of tropical rainforest remaining in Australia. Situated at over a thousand metres elevation, the preserve and surrounding World Heritage listed area are home to rare, unique and primitive plants and animals, many of which are considered locally endemic. Giant emergent trees dominate the canopy and provide habitat for 12 species of possums (including the rare White Lemuroid), and Lumholtz’s tree-kangaroo. In addition, red-legged pademelons, swamp wallabies, musky rat-kangaroos, tiger quolls, platypus, bandicoots, flying foxes, insectivorous bats, forest dragons, leaf-tailed geckos, pythons and many other species can also be found here. Over 200 bird species have been observed within the preserve including Victoria’s Riflebird, Golden and Tooth-billed Bowerbirds, Chowchilla, Fernwren, Bassian Thrush, Blue-faced Finch, White-throated Nightjar, Red-backed Quail, Cassowary and even an Emu with chicks! Rufous and Lesser Sooty Owls, Pacific Baza and the white morph of the Grey Goshawk have all nested within the preserve in recent years. Masked Owl, Little Eagle, Square-tailed Kite and Red Goshawk are often seen early in the year.

Ideally situated close to a rainforest-eucalypt ecotone, the preserve and surrounding fauna sanctuary are recognized as having one of the largest concentrations of possum species and tree-kangaroos. With such an abundance of wildlife, daytime birdwatching and nocturnal wildlife viewing by spotlighting are both exciting and rewarding.

A Typical 3-day/2-night
Wildlife and Birding Excursion

On a trip of this duration, we usually begin in the Cairns city area and then traverse the Kuranda Range to the Tablelands region where we then spend the next three days. The Tablelands and surrounding area, just west of Cairns, contains the most accessible and diverse habitats that support the greatest concentrations of wildlife and bird species found within Australia. Habitats visited during a 3-day excursion include upland and highland rainforest, wet and dry sclerophyll woodlands, savannah, arable lands and wetlands. Our tours provide access to a number of excellent wildlife areas not used by other commercial operators.

Bird species that we are likely to observe in these areas during a 3-day excursion include: Victoria's Riflebird, Golden and Tooth-billed Bowerbirds, Spotted Catbird, Chowchilla, Whipbird, Little Lorrikeet, Red-tailed Black-cockatoo, Crested Shrike-tit, Sarus Crane, Bustard, Pink-eared Duck, Squatter Pigeon, Black-throated Finch, and Pale-headed Rosella plus many others.

big tree In addition to birding, we also do an early morning, pre-breakfast platypus viewing, and a nocturnal wildlife spotlighting evening at 'Warrigal', our private highland preserve in search of nocturnal animals such as Lumholtz's Tree-kangaroo, rare ringtail possums, Rufous and Lesser Sooty Owls, White-throated Nightjars, Frogmouths and other species. On a recent four day excursion we found ten species of kangaroos and a number of Frilled Lizards. (see below for bird and mammal lists of species we have seen while on tours).

Itineraries are flexible to account for weather conditions prevailing at the time. For those individuals interested in a reef trip, we can arrange for a day out to a sand cay / seabird refuge. To thoroughly explore all the various habitats of the region, including the lowland rainforests, mangroves and intertidal zone, we recommend a five-night / six-day excursion.
