map of southern Ontario

NOTE: Each of the following comprises a one-day birding trip. Of course the visitor may choose any or all.

The St. Clair National Wildlife Area

This is in extreme southern Ontario, not far east of Detroit, Michigan. It is a good place for Least Bitterns and even a possible Yellow-headed Blackbird. You will have lunch at Pt. Pelee, a peninsula jutting from Ontario's southernmost county, Essex, southward into Lake Erie. This area lies farther south than California's northernmost point. Nesting species here include Yellow-breasted Chats and Orchard Orioles. Supper will be in Rondeau Provincial Park where Prothonotary and Cerulean Warblers nest.

The Carolinean Forests of
Norfolk County near Long Point

Long Point is a slender peninsula thrusting from southern Haldimand-Norfolk County into Lake Erie, about 75 air-miles WSW of Buffalo, New York. Among the nesting warblers here are are the Hooded, Cerulean and Prairie Warblers, just to mention a few.

The Bruce Peninsula

This finger of land separates Lake Huron from Ontario's Georgian Bay, about 175 air-miles northwest of Niagara Falls. Here you can see not only spectacular limestone cliffs, sea caves, and a wide variety of ferns, but also over 160 species of nesting birds. To do the whole Peninsula in one day is actually rushing things a bit. It might be best to work out a two-day schedule with John.
