Getting to Mayuram Farm-Lodge

map of local area The lodge at Govindapperi is 247km by road from Ernakulam, 167km from Madurai and 137km from Thiruvananthapuram, the three nearest airports. Of these Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram are international airports. The nearest broad-guage railway station is at Thirunelveli, about 60km from Govindapperi. There is however, a metre-guage railway station at Ravanasamudram, which is only 5km from Mayuram.

From Shenkottah, you can reach Mayuram either through the famous temple town of Thenkasi, or through Kuttalam, the local spa. To go through Thenkasi, take NH 208 and turn off the highway in Thenkasi town, taking the road to Ambasamudram.

About 18km along this road is a small town called Kadaiyam, from where you turn off to the right for Govindapperi. From Kadaiyam, the route takes you through several small villages. The route is either Kadaiyam - Ravanasamudram - Rajangapuram - Govindapperi, or Kadaiyam - Mandiyur - Rajangapuram - Govindapperi.

To drive through Kuttalam to Govindapperi, you will need to turn right after Kuttalam town, taking the road towards Old Kuttalam. Continuing straight past the turn-off to Old Kuttalam brings you to the main road from Thenkasi to Ambasamudram. Driving through Kuttalam lets you avoid the congestion and complications of Thenkasi town.

To get to the lodge from Quilon or its vicinity, take the NH 208 to Shenkottah, via Kottarakkara, Punalur and Thenmalai.

From Thiruvananthapuram: Travellers from the Southern tourist beaches at Kovalam, Vizhinjam and Poovar, or from the hills of Ponmudi, can drive through Palode and Kulathupuzha to connect to NH 208 at Thenmala. (The KFDC forest lodge en-route at Arippa could provide an exciting stopover for enthusiastic birders)

Visitors from Ernakulam or Alappuzha can take the NH 47 south to Kayamkulam, and turn off at Kayankulam for Adoor. From Kumarakom and Kottayam too, the MC Road will take you straight to Adoor, via Changanassery, Tiruvalla, Chengannur and Pandalam.

From Adoor town, turn left again, taking the road to Pathanapuram. At Pathanapuram, turn right onto the main road from Moovattupuzha to Punalur, where you meet the NH 208 from Quilon to Shenkottah. Turn left onto it to proceed to Shenkottah, and thence to Govindapperi.

Coming down from Thekkady, you need to come to the town of Ranni, either through Manimala, or through Erumeli. Visitors from the KFDC accomodations at Gavi can also come straight to Ranni, without touching Manimala or Erumeli. From Ranni, the main road takes you through Konni and Pathanapuram to Punalur.

From Madurai, you can go to straight to Thenkasi, without passing through Shenkottah. The route from Madurai would be Madurai - Srivilliputtur - Rajapalaiyam - Sivagiri - Kadaiyanallur - Tenkasi.

Travellers from Madurai can also take the NH 7 south to Thirunelveli city, and from there proceed to Pottalpudur through the small villages of Mukkudal and Pappankulam. At Pottalpudur, you meet the main road from Thenkasi to Ambasamudram. Go through Pottalpudur village and turn left off the main road to go to Govindapperi via Senbangulam village.
