ITINERARY

Indio Mais Biosphere Reserve This trip is the best overall birding experience we can offer. It includes a ride down the Rio San Juan via motorized panga (river canoe) from San Carlos to the Rio Bartola, three days in the Indio-Mais Biological Preserve (a 160,000 hectare/392,000 acre lowland rainforest) a glimpse of which is shown at the right, a possible visit to Boca de Sabados herpetology breeding station (depending on time), and a possible visit to El Castillo, a Spanish colonial fort originally built to protect the river from English pirates in the 18th century. Highlights of the trip include: two under-canopy interpretive hikes, one full-day paddle canoe trip up the Rio Bartola, a jungle stream where the canopy meets over your head, large numbers of macaws, caiman, three species of monkey, amazing orchids, etc. The trip is a breathtaking glimpse of true "jungle". Accommodations are at the Hotel Bartola, a comfortable ecolodge on the edge of the reserve.
