ITC arranges home stay with Nepali Families. Living in a Nepali home provides the perfect opportunity to combine language study and cross cultural exchange. It can yield unforgettable insights into festivals and life "behind closed doors" in Nepal. Many life long friendships have been formed through happy family stay experiences. On the host page we introduce some of the families working with us.

When a visitor comes, we need to know about the following things:

  1. Would they prefer to stay in the outskirts of the city or in a rural area far from the capital city (Kathmandu)?
  2. How long do they want to stay?
  3. What are they going to do with the family? Do they have any project or study or do they just want to spend some time with the family?
Also, it would be good if potential visitors consider the following:
  • Nepal is a very poor country and living standards are very low. The facilities that are provided by the families might be very low standard with regard to basic facilities such as toilet conditions, hygenic food and general cleanliness.
  • What will be your plan if you become ill or have an accident?
  • Would you prefer to stay in a modern house which has hot shower, good room, etc. or in a typical Nepali house with no modern facilities like a hot shower or modern toilet?
  • Would you prefer to stay in:
    • Kathmandu, in the inner city area
    • Kathmandu, residential area
    • the countryside 4/5 kilometers north of the city?
Potential visitors should read books about Nepal. Though the books cannot portrey the situation exactly, they can provide a general impression.
Learning the Nepali Language

ITC teachers Our Intercultural Research and Training Centre by no means limits itself to organizing homestays. Homestays constitute only part of what we do. In fact, our special focus is on learning the Nepali language, using the excellent Nepali teachers shown here, who emphasize learning in a cultural context.

In one week of studies, or between 20-30 hours of lessons, you can learn useful words, phrases, expressions and sentence construction for very basic. No previous knowledge of Nepali necessary. This costs US $110.

Become confident in using Nepali with Basic Nepali, studying for 50 to 60 hours. This includes basic reading and writing, basic grammar construction, common words and phrases using situational teaching approaches. By the end of this course you will be able to make simple conversation. Course includes free course book. No previous knowledge of Nepali necessary and the cost is US $220.

learning Nepali while playingReview and expand the content of Basic Nepali in our "Situational Nepali" course. Practice in expressing thoughts, feelings, your job, family kinship, giving instructions, exchanging ideas, telephone conversation etc. This is our most popular course here at ITC and has been running successfully for the last 8 years. In addition to mentioned content, living skills in Nepal are also covered. Emphasis is placed on conversational ability, reading and writing. This course is tailor made for large groups, and we work with individuals, in small and in large groups, using methods such as role-play and practice in real situations. Whilst some knowledge of Nepali would be helpful for this course, Situational Nepali could possibly be taught to hard working beginners. Course lasts for 6 Weeks, Mon - Fri, 4 Hours per day (total 120 hours), and costs US $440.

In our Intermediate Nepali course, work your way up through more sentence patterns to widen your expression. Cultural input will help you to piece together and respond sensitively to what is going on all around you. Focus on increasing comprehension of subtle ideas, listening, comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Role-play and other exercise reinforce textbook work to introduce colloquial expressions and idioms. Students should have experience of working in Nepali or have completed other, equivalent courses to Basic Nepali. This instructiopn costs US $4 per hour.

In our Advanced Nepali course, increase your general language skill through guided discussions and compositions based on news broadcasts, newspaper and magazine articles. Some grammatical rules are explained. Basic knowledge is transformed into an improved command and confidence with the language.
