SIX DAY ITINERARY:

Day 1: Theme: "The Reef Sanctuary"

at the water's edge

Paul McGaham, a Contours Conservation Tourism Consultant of Christchurch has called this area "One of the most Spectacular natural lagoons found anywhere on the World," and today you get to see what he meant.  Reserved by the World Heritage Program, no extensive fishing has been permitted in the lagoon for a number of years, so that now it is in a state of naturalness found in few corners of the world.

As with most reef environments, water is shallow in some parts of the lagoon (between 1 – 3 Meters, or 3 – 10 feet, according to the tides) and deep in others. In the shallow areas snorkelers can see everything and more of what you'd expect of a long-protected tropical lagoon. Divers can explore the reef's drop-off area, where depths plunge to 16 meters (52 feet).

When the tide is right Eric will boat snorkelers to the reef's most spectacular section, and if you need instruction, an instructor will teach you and stay with you throughout your explorations. Snorkeling is easy and quick to learn, and you can even wear a lifevest if you want. Among the organisms to keep a lookout for are:

  • big lobsters prowling among the corals
  • dolphin schools
  • fish of various kinds that follow snorkelers, perhaps from mere curiosity
  • Parrotfishes which noisily nibble on the corals

DAY 2: Theme: "The Forest Reserve"

trail through the forestA network of nature trails crisscrosses much of the island, burrowing through a unique kind of forest with many waxy-leaved trees and trees with air roots. This is an ideal location for spotting tropical island forest-birds, or to simply sit and watch crabs, which seem to be scurrying everywhere.

DAY 3: Theme: "The Historical Village"

With its strategic position in the east coast, this area always played an important role in navigation in the Marovo lagoon waters. Biche Village is unique with its fish sanctuary, stone ball, and custom houses. Village guides will take you to all those interesting and historical sites.

DAY 4: Theme: "A River Trip"

Today Eric takes you ashore for a day excursion through the famous and only big river in the Marovo Lagoon area. For this you typically join a group of people to take a ride on a boat, accompanied by local guides up the river and return.

Day 5: Theme "A Mountain Climb"

Today Eric takes you on an excursion to climb the only Mountain on Ngatokae Island in the Marovo Lagoon. The mountain is called Mt. Mariu and it is surrounded with jungle. You will experience the sound of birds, animals and many creeping creatures on your trip to the mountain.

DAY 6: Theme: "Scenic Tour in the Lagoon"

Today Eric will take you on a trip around the famous Marovo Lagoon. The journey is going to be wonderful.  There will be amazing scenes that will excite you. Hundreds of islands with different structures will compose and recompose themselves into beautiful pictures. A local guide will explain the names of trees, plants, fish, etc.

A Special Note about the Eco-Lodge

Our eco-lodges offer you both privacy and the feeling of living in the open. The bungalows overlook the sea and the ocean and it's only a few seconds' walk to the beach and reef. All our bungalows are equipped with twin beds under a thatched-palm roof. There is a separate building for front office, kitchen, and living area attached with a large deck. Our bungalows provide an opportunity to get away from more conventional hotels into a more beautiful and accessible areas of the Solomon Islands.

To get to Serere Fringing Reef  Lodge from Honiara, prospective visitors travel by Solomon Airlines to Ngatokae. Connections will be from there by fast outboard motor canoe – a fantastice way to see the scenery of Marovo Lagoon.
