EarthFoot Destination #th002:
In Northern Thailand,

Exploring the Golden Triangle
with A Cultural Anthropologist

Host: Dr. Jeffrey Petry

When: Year round

Length of tour: As long as the visitor likes

Ideal group size: 4

Languages: English, French, Thai, Vietnamese

Fee charged: About US $150 per day, but it all depends on size of group, travel requirements, how luxurious the lodging should be, how long the tour is, how much you are willing to contribute to the village communities visited, etc.

Program outline:  You will be traveling with a cultural anthropologist in one of the fascinating regions of the world.  Since your host is so knowledgeable of the region, the program outline will depend entirely upon your own interests and imagination.  You describe your general inclinations, Dr. Petry will make concrete suggestions, and then a plan will be firmed up.

We'll travel along the borders of  Thailand, Laos and Burma. Trips can be created anywhere between beautiful and unexplored Nan Province, north towards the Golden Triangle Area of Chiang Saen & Chiang Khong. This is the home of many mountain peoples and friendly, distinct cultures.

We can visit the border town of Mae Sai where we can walk across the border for a day, enjoying the curiosities of a true Asian frontier market. After Mae Sai, we could head for the hills around Doi Mae Salong, a fascinating mountainside village in the clouds which was founded by Kuomintang soldiers fleeing China half a century ago. From here on to Ban Thaton and the resort of a colorful Irishmen who has developed the best soft adventure tour products in northern
Thailand, all based out of a 4-star resort. From here we could head back to Chiang Mai for a night in the city before you move on to your next destinations...
