A 7-DAY "VOLUNTEER" MANATEE
RESEARCH OPTION

THE FLORIDA MANATEE - UNDER ATTACK!
This marine mammal is a member of the family Sirenia. Sirens of the Ocean that some say gave rise to the mermaid myths. Their siren call today is not as picturesque. The Florida manatee is a species of marine mammal that is under attack from land and sea. The population of Florida is increasing at one of the fastest rates of any State in the Union. On of the major reasons for this phenomenal growth being a plethora of outdoor activities, particularly Golfing and Boating that can be enjoyed during Florida's warm and sunny winters. These activities combine to attack the manatees directly and indirectly by physically killing them and by polluting their habitat.

Our 7 day service program will allow you to be part of the data gathering necessary to understand and protect these gentle giants. Over four days, using a combination of a 6 passenger research pontoon boat and a flotilla of sea kayaks, we shall calmly cruise the main channels and backwaters of the 10,000 Islands (Collier County) and Estero Bay (Lee County) to identify individual manatee, observe and record their activities and behaviours in two of Florida's most dangerous counties for manatees. We shall also compile a dossier of boater activity recording courteous as well as inconsiderate behaviour.

Everglades scene While undertaking this wonderful experience you will be treated to one of the most beautiful and unique ecosystems in the world - the Everglades. You will see the many birds that are indigenous to the area. Also learn the fascinating history of the area from the captain and kayak guides and be on the lookout for other marine specialties of Florida, such as dolphins and sea turtles.

On our way north we shall stop at the Mote Marine Laboratory to share your experiences with the members of staff at Florida's top marine mammal research facilities. Then as your treat the wild manatees at Crystal River will meet you and show their gratitude as only they can, for a job well done. Guest speakers from Save the Manatee Club and other organizations dedicated to the protection of our marinelife will join us at various times to be determined by their schedules.
