The Transylvanian Foothills

Nature, Culture and History of Transylvania

Thumbnail description:
Host Count Tibor Kalnoky has returned to his origins in Transylvania after 50 years of exile. You are invited to visit his family's ancestoral home, the remote little village of Miklósvár, Miclosoara, in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains. Here we present a  proposed two-week itinerary to give an idea of what can be done during a visit, though a visit of any length is welcome. Everything from hiking to discovering the local wines and take wagon trips in the countryside is possible.

In the High Mountains

Two Weeks in the Southern Carpathians, from the Danube to the Mountain Tops

Thumbnail description:
Host Radu Creanga is a geographer with many interests, especially his homeland. Here he proposes a two-week expedition especially for travelers such as "students, backpackers, hikers, naturalists or nature lovers," who are in good enough physical shape to do a bit of hiking in order to see the really special places. The trip is partly by van, partly by train, partly by hiking, and there's even a little boating if you want. There are plenty of lakes, hot springs and steep-walled gorges in this trip.

Trekking Romania's High Mountains

Thumbnail description:
Host Iulian Cozma offers reasonably priced Alpine trekking with a variety of locations, difficulty level and degrees of luxury. Here, just to give an idea of what is possible, he describes a ten-day itinerary that is mostly backpacking but with a bit of local culture thrown in as well. Lodging can range from a rugged basecamp, or evenings can be arranged in Romanian villages, or rather nice hotels when they are available.
